These timbers are being used in a heavy duty Rail Crossing situation. The undercut is situated against the rail and allows the rail plates and fasteners to have clearance. The fasteners in this case are called Pandrol Plates or MSR plates. The clips are made of spring steel and must be pressed into position by machinery or an accurate blow with a sledgehammer.
